It has been 2 months since we began our cyber education with Georgia Cyber Academy. I have to say going in, I was very nervous and I even wondered if this would teach my son all that he needs for the “real world”. I have not been disappointed. This curriculum is very challenging, but it is awesome! I cannot believe what my son is learning at the Kindergarten level. He has Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Phonics, History, Handwriting, and I supplement Bible, Art, and music. We have done projects from constructing our own Great Barrier Reef to collecting and gathering information to make graphs. My only complaint is that it does get to be too much for a 5 year old at times, so I try to give him breaks as often as I can. You also have the freedom to advance in your lessons if the child already knows the material or needs more of a challenge. My son loves handwriting, math, social studies, and science, so we have doubled up on lessons in these areas many times. As a result, he is already finished with Kindergarten Social Studies and 3 pages from being finished with Handwriting. We also had an opportunity to attend one of the many field trips that Georgia Cyber Academy and K12 provide. It was amazing to see how many people are participating in this form of education. Another great advantage is that my 2 year old can learn right along with my son. She she is being introduced to this material at an early age.
There are days that I wish that I could put him on a bus and send him away for 8 hours, but I quickly remind myself of why it is we are doing this. I have never been challenged this much in my life! Trying to be a wife, mother, and teacher can be difficult at times, but it is rewarding all at the same time. I am very pleased with the choice that we have made and I am looking forward to the months ahead of us.
