Well, it is official my son is enrolled and has been accepted into the Georgia Cyber Academy for the Fall! He will be entering Kindergarten and I am excited and nervous at the same time. The Georgia Cyber Academy is a virtual Charter School that is offered through the K12 Program. After weeks of paperwork and faxing, he was accepted on yesterday. The school is considered a virtual “public school”, so all of the books and materials are free. He will be receiving a huge box of workbooks, computer learning games, reading cards, musical instruments for music class, art materials….everything we need. The great thing about it is, they will be delivered to the door via courier. We will be assigned a teacher that will work with me and we will also have many field trips and regular opportunities for him to socialize with other GCA students and his homeroom teacher.
After a year of homeschooling, I am not sure how I will like being given a curriculum and being held accountable by the Board of Education. It will take some of the work off of me, though. I have heard that it is a very challenging curriculum, but I am okay with that. The best part of this program is that we can go as fast or as slow as we need to. So, my son is not left behind and we can spend extra time on the material he finds difficult or we can move ahead if he has mastered and passed his assessments. He is also required to take the same standardized tests as other public school students, so that we can make sure he has learned everything he needs for that year. I am looking forward to seeing how this works for us. I would love to find out opinions from any of you who have experience with Georgia Cyber Academy or any K12 virtual school.
